Silent Statement
May 31, 2007 by haziamyperspective
The gathering was almost over. The people seated at my table have left. Suddenly, this lady caught my eye, excused herself from her table and came over to talk to me.
Yes, I knew exactly who she was. A prominent figure in the local PR scene, I’ve met her several times over the last 7 years. She had a distinct character, just like the inspiring bosses that I’ve worked with during my stint in the hotel industry. Yes, ‘distinct’ is definitely the word.
She reminded me of the karate master in the Karate Kid movie. She was one who could make a statement without saying anything. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to work with/for her; she had her own firm. I had a feeling she was about to solicit that when someone else came to join us.
Anyway, she couldn’t ask me directly. Not only my boss was seated at the next table, they also had an understanding in the industry not to pinch each other’s staffs.
Another MD who interviewed me last month was present too. He had been going after me for 2 years. 2 months ago, I finally agreed to see him. Unfortunately, he ended up telling me that there was no match at the moment but asked me to keep in touch in case of future opening. However, I think it was because his number 2 was doubtful.
Just now, when we shook hands, he avoided eye contact. Yeah, something wasn’t right. In the past, he would give me a ‘meaningful’ look despite the fact that he was normally a poker-face person.
That was another thing. The longer I’ve been in this industry, the more history I’d have with the key people. It made me uneasy. It really is time to move on.
All in all, this event was a bit different.
Instead of spending time talking to and impressing the senior members of the profession, I chatted with the juniors instead. I shared my experience and career tips. Think I must be getting old. LOL!
Anyway, the industry figures knew me already. I was always surprised with how detail they remembered my background, they practically memorise my CV:)
Oh, before I forget, I need to send an email to an ex-client in Dubai. Will share later;)
