I finally got a short stories’ collection written by my course instructor at Kinokuniya yesterday. I didn’t want to buy it from his shop because I didn’t want him to know that I haven’t read it yet, hehe…
What turned me off initially was the title, and the cover. The combination made it sound so posh, like very British. The content, as I discovered last night, was something else. They are very Malaysian, mostly related to his own ethnic group.
I noticed that he used himself for the ‘I’ character quite often. During our course, he discouraged us from doing that, in case we could not separate ourself from the character. I’d say that his writer’s voice is quite distinct, somewhere between witty and sarcastic. Haha!
His stories are quite long, a medium book consisted of less than 10 stories only. It could also be the large font size.
I think I enjoyed reading short stories more now since I understood the mechanics of it. Hence, here I am, reading his stories only 1 year after his course:D
