Back in Time

For the first time in years, the New Straits Times was sold out long before The Star.
At noon, the stall at Devi’s Corner ran out of it, so I rushed to Bangsar Village supermarket, also gone. I went upstairs to MPH, a lady was reading a newspaper. She asked me what I was looking for, I mentioned NST. She said she was reading the last copy; she folded it and passed it to me. I couldn’t believe it. She didn’t want it.
What happened? LOL! NST came up with a briliant idea of publishing a series of real old newspapers from 24 to 31 August 1957 (as an attachment). Printed in Singapore, it was in black & white, even the advertisements. The font was a bit faded too. However, I was impressed by the quality of news. That was true hardcore journalism, not fluffy statements as cooked up by the politicians of today.
I felt as if I had travelled back in time and was witnessing the actual events leading up to our Independence. It was very moving. Everything was solid news. Even the lifestyle page had a fresh touch to it. I caught brief profile write-ups of the swimsuit queen, classic books writer Han Suyin, etc.
