I have visited the Kebaya Man’s boutique a few times since we first bumped into each other a week ago. And each time, I ended up staying for hours. There was just something about the place and we always had a lot to talk about. Yesterday alone, I was there for more than 4 hours.
Apart from his sister and his partner, I had met quite a number of his friends. By now, I was basically up to date with most of his business problems and future expansion plans. He was aiming for the moon. I was also aware of his ‘out of this world disease’ sparked by jealousy which was common among Malay businessmen. I was amazed that he didn’t budge though, it was quite serious.
Just now I brought a friend who was doing a programme for a TV station and a high profile charity event. It would be a good medium to feature his Kebaya. She tried on a Kebaya, an off-white lacy piece paired with mermaid sarung. It fitted her like a second skin (their key selling point). It was as if it was made for her. He had to consult his partner on the price though.
She said she didn’t mind helping because she could tell that he was genuinely a nice guy. Hmm… I thought only I believed so because he was my friend.
He highlighted the European influences in the Kebaya e.g. kimono sleeves, cheong sam neck, Victorian collar, Flamenco sleeves, etc. I confessed that I didn’t own a single Kebaya, my mother said I didn’t have the body for it. He said their product was meant for women from all sizes and shapes. The Indonesians’ secret was in the polar calculation. I should try a Kebaya:)
His charming partner cum designer wanted to do one for me for Raya, that was sweet. Well, he offered me some income making opportunities when I bring in customers. But I knew how bad I was at selling so I told him I’d bring people there FOC instead. LOL!
Basically, their aim was to go beyond their usual celebrity circle. The main target were repeated customers, people who attended high society functions every other week. His partner had done wonders with the Malay media. Now is the time to target English and Chinese media.
It gives me satisfaction to be able to utilise my skills to help a friend. I need to do something meaningful once in a while. Otherwise, I sort of feel dead inside. Fashion is also fun, and that does lift up the spirit a bit:)
