Writing Places

An entry on a few writers’ blogs today caught my attention.
Guardian featured a link to stories and photos of where famous writers write: http://books.guardian.co.uk/writersrooms
Here another link to where new, non-famous writers write. There’s not much difference in idea and concept, except that the furnishing is more modern:)

You’d notice that they all either write in their studies or quietly at a desk at home. I have to say that I am surprised by the discovery.
Check out the pics of their work areas. Most of them either sit facing the cold hard walls or work in a claustrophobic environment. I think Carmen Callil’s (pic on top) and David Lodge’s (pic at the end) are two of the few appealing ones with desks facing windows, hehe…
Where do I write? LOL! I carry my laptop around and I write (or type) at open cafes e.g. Coffee Bean, Starbucks, La Bodega, etc. I did it a couple of times at KL Sentral too. I would have written at Devi’s Corner if the coming patrons don’t act impatient for me to get up so that they could have my table. On a slow day at the office or during lunch time, I often squeezed in some writing as well. By now, I could easily block off the noise and chaos around me.
Don’t get me wrong. I do have a desk at home. Only, I used it mostly when I need to use the internet or update my blog, not for serious writing.
I find writing at home facing the 4 walls an uninspiring process, a brain dead experience indeed. The air is static, the environment is unmoving. What’s this tip about always write with your back facing the window? It had something to do with gaining focus and avoiding distraction. Come on, why torture yourself and be deprived of the view? Now I know why most writers appear ‘eccentrics’.
Frankly, I could churn out like 5 times as much writing outside than I did at home. Forget about discipline, I don’t work with fix schedules and force myself to write when I’m not in the mood. I only make sure that my lazy period doesn’t drag, heheh. Who knows when I become a renowned author, then I’ll start writing at home following a pre-determined schedule instead. LOL!
