Changing Path
March 26, 2008 by haziamyperspective
A Branding Consultant whom I introduced to my boss yesterday shared an interesting finding. Americans change their careers an average of 7 times during their lifetime; while for Malaysians, it is 4 times. Career change does not include job or organsation’s change, it means pure change of career path i.e. Accounting to PR in my case.
He also said employers fail to hire the right people because they look at paper qualifications and skills, rather than one’s DNA. If you have the right DNA, other things e.g. training, grooming, etc would come easily. For example, if a child is talented musician & parents forced him into being a doctor, lawyer, etc, he won’t succeed.
Which made me think… hard… I have only changed career once. I’m already in my mid-30s, maybe it is time I hop onto another career path. Maybe, after 10 years, I’ve had enough of PR. At this stage, the challenge is to get out of one’s comfort zone and try new things e.g. unfamiliar field, environment / a different country, different expertise, etc. When I made the present move, it is an entirely different environment. I expected culture shock but I doubt that I even have the right DNA. It just doesn’t feel right. Lot of research to do, better to keep an open mind too.
