Space Attack

I am expecting the first of my 5 new staffs tomorrow. So, on Friday, I cleared up the 2 empty cubicles where the previous staffs left 3 months ago - one for higher salary but had been wanting to come back like a month later & the other, I would not keep him. Man, the junk underneath the desks, I knocked my head several times, not to mention, having to suffer from the dust. And imagine my shock at my discovery.
This is my 6th employment and I’ve never seen people resigning and leaving their place in such a mess. Yes, the boxes of old files should go to the storeroom and we have space constraint. But, I’d assumed that people would at least throw away their personal rubbish before leaving. Among the items found were a staff’s confirmation letter from 2 generations ago and the previous person’s appointment letter. There wasn’t even room to move your legs under the desks, how did those people work? Is that why the turnover in this department is even higher than the company’s 30% staff turnover rate?
I’ve also been at this company long enough to know that the procedures (or was it the people in charge) do not automatically ensure a clean workplace for new people coming in. I wasn’t going to let my new staffs come in to an environment like that, makes you feel like you’re sitting at someone else’s place & rubbish dump. So, I got my hands dirty and cleared them up myself, with the help of the Newspaper Man niece whose last day of internship was Friday. She has a lot of potential and I made a good decision in having her, even for just 3 months.
Due to space constraint too, my new clerk would have to sit at the library. Man, I really don’t want the librarian cum ex-driver influencing her. It’s quite a distance from my office, by right she was like my secretary, how could they place her separately. There is also no privacy there. Like always, I’ll wait for the right time before highlighting the situation to the ones above.
She has not accepted the job offer due to low salary but if she declined again, I think I’d go for my tigeress 2nd choice candidate. That would really give these people a taste of their own medicine. Not to mention, my senior staff would have to share my room, so I would no longer have a room to myself. Too bad. I hope they get a new building soon.
